"Hu Yinping: Sa ge long dong" is an extension of the art initiative "Hu Xiaofang" launched by the artist Hu Yinping in 2015. The project, under the name of "Hu Xiaofang", enlisted retired women from a small town to contribute to the creation through knitting, bringing them unforeseen levels of psychological solace and life enrichment. Moreover, it created a meaningful connection with the world through today's globalized Internet of Things, making it an important practice of Chinese contemporary art in responding to the needs of the expanding silver-haired population.
The phrase "Sa ge long dong", originating from the Wu dialect, denotes "everything". The project selects works of various forms in the history of Chinese and foreign art, as well as literature with special relevance to Suzhou, and extends an invitation to retired professionals and master craftsmen in the field of handicrafts to collaborate. Over the span of two months, through the traditional handicraft of knitting and social participation methods, the project cleverly combines modern and contemporary art with the quotidian charm of everyday life, infusing it with a renewed sense of warmth and humanity.
